Community Involvement

The Salt Lake County Children’s Justice Center has been our designated charity since 2010.
We have made a long term commitment to this program and the children they help.

Where Small Voices Can Be Heard

Child abuse is a traumatic and devastating experience for both children and their families. Victims are often confused and blame themselves. The Children’s Justice Center (CJC) is a home-like, child-friendly facility where children receive coordinated services during the child abuse investigative process by decreasing secondary trauma that may be caused by the criminal justice and child protection systems. The CJC is a Salt Lake County government program administered by the Division of Youth Services within the Department of Human Services.

The Salt Lake County Children’s Justice Center is an exceptional program, contributing major advancements in the field of child abuse investigations. The program serves 3,700 people annually and provides critical assistance with investigations involving sexual abuse, physical abuse, child homicide, domestic violence related child abuse, abductions, and shaken baby syndrome. The centers are located in neighborhood settings, decorated like “grandma’s house” and designed to help children feel safe and comfortable during the interview process. Children visit the center for about one hour while investigators from law enforcement and child protective services meet with the child and their parents to obtain statements and provide support. Crisis intervention, advocacy, and referral services are provided to help the family cope with the aftermath of abuse. Through the coordination services of the Children’s Justice Center, involved agencies work together to promote the “best interests of the child” in prosecution and protection proceedings.

December 2009 Service Project

The Faith Community's Unique Response to Homeless Families
Across the nation, Family Promise affiliates
like ours rely upon a network of area congregations who open their doors to families in need. Families receive
hospitality at each congregation for a week at a time with each family sleeping in its own private room at the church.
Every Sunday volunteers help to move the families to the next congregation in the
rotation. Each church hosts
3-4 weeks annually.

Approximately 50 volunteers each week work to provide these guest families with basic human needs: shelter, safety,
and sustenance. Just as important is their work in providing companionship, acceptance and dignity to each individual
they welcome. Both volunteers and guests grow, learning from each other and coming to know one another as
individual human beings with inherent worth.

As part of the HJ & Associates annual holiday event, the company and employees donated
money to purchase much needed supplies for the families helped by Family Promise.  The
employees also spent time sorting donated clothing and supplies; cleaning the facility, and
stocking the shelves of the Salt Lake City organization.

December 2010 Service Project

The Avenues location had not been updated for several decades. All the rooms needed a
complete overhaul.  The kitchen was beige and boring.  The cabinets were banged up and
in need of a paint job.

The child interview rooms needed the wallpaper stripped and painted.
Stencils were used in the hallways and rooms

June 2011 Service Project

The South Valley location was beginning to look a little neglected and in need of some
serious attention.  We needed to weed the gardens and lay bark around the building.  The
grounds required mowing, raking, weeding, removing and trimming trees and shrubs, To
finish off the project we laid weed cloth and bark

comm3

Before cleaning up the mess, we spent a little time making a bigger mess.

A whole lot of clean-up and a couple well deserved breaks...

December 2011 Service Project

The firm delivered truckloads of much needed donated supplies to the Children’s Justice Center as well as finishing
the much needed updates by doing several projects throughout the house.

In the Kitchen we updated the cabinets, installed window treatments and made a tiled grill cover.

In the Parent Room we installed window treatments and replicated the home’s trim work around the doors.

The Director’s Office was stenciled and window treatment installed.

The Surfer Room had trim work installed and got a fresh new look.

The Living Room was in desperate need of two new sofas.

Two of the Bathrooms also received updated looks.
One with painted stripes and the other with accessories.

In the Conference Room we installed new blinds and cleaned the old wood fireplace.

The Basement Storage Room received a thorough cleaning and a fresh coat of cheerful paint.

The very long and boring Hallway received a facelift with the installation of new botanical art leading to an incredible
waterfall wall mural.
